Emergency Outpatient Medication
 
Permits nurses working in a facility to administer and distribute medications on an emergency basis to outpatients or inpatients being discharged if the facility’s pharmacy is closed. Requires the nurse to have a written or electronic order for the medication. Limits the quantity of the medication distributed on an emergency basis to a 72 hour supply, but provides exceptions to certain medications (e.g., z-packs, oral pediatric antibiotics, etc.). Requires the prescription order to be placed in the patient’s medication record and be made available for review by a pharmacist. Requires facilities to maintain records of all medications distributed in the emergency room.
