Research in Vermont
Patients have the right to be informed about a health care facility or provider’s desire to conduct medical research and to provide written informed consent prior to participating in the research.1 Health care providers must maintain medical information in a confidential manner, but may disclose the information for research purposes.2
Vermont law requires the Department of Human Services, Department of Education, and University of Vermont must partner to research various health issues.3 The State Board of Health must conduct research on chronic diseases.4 The Department of Health must conduct research or disclose information for research on various conditions and illness including cancer and infectious diseases.5 Medical or research data is considered confidential and not public records.6
