Standards of Practice - appropriate pain management
Establishes standards of practice for pain management treatment that seek to balance the need to treat pain with controlled substances and the need to safeguard against the potential for substance abuse or diversion of controlled substances. Requires providers to evaluate patients and, if necessary, refer or consult with a physician that has expertise in treating the area at issue, or with pain medication, addiction, or substance abuse. Requires physicians to develop a treatment plan, obtain the patient’s informed consent, and periodically review the treatment plan. Requires physicians to retain records that establish their compliance with these standards of practice.
