“Disclosure of information from vital records under the public health law”
All protected health information contained in vital records must be treated confidentiality by the Department of Health and Human Services. Any release of information must comply with the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996. The department may release vital record information to conduct health-related research provided that the information will be returned to the department or destroyed.
