“Required further screening or diagnostic testing if initial specimen is abnormal”
The director of health will communicate the results of the required newborn screening if the results indicate a potential risk for one or more of the screened disorders to the following:
- If the child was born in a hospital or freestanding birthing center, to the child’s attending physician, primary medical provider, pediatrician, certified nurse midwife, certified nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialist;
- If the director is unable to contact the attending physician, primary medical provider, pediatrician, certified nurse midwife, certified nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialist, the director shall communicate the results to the newborn screening coordinator;
- If the child was not born in a hospital or freestanding birthing center, the director shall communicate the results to the designated person.
The person notified of these results must communicate the results to the child’s parent, legal guardian or legal custodian and attempt to obtain a second sample for screening.
If after ten days, the person responsible for the second test is unable to obtain a specimen for further testing after a reasonable effort, they shall inform the health commissioner who then must also make a reasonable effort to locate the child for 30 days. A report is submitted to the director when a case is closed, listing the names of newborns that were not located.
