“Perioperative Period; Patient Discharge”

Licensed Arizona physicians, that use sedation when performing office-based surgery, must physically attend the surgery and be available to respond to an emergency until the patient no longer needs post-sedation monitoring. A physician or an appropriately certified health care professional must be available to respond to an emergency until the patient is charged. Arizona requires ACLS, PALS, or BLS certification for patients that received minimal sedation and ACLS or PALS certification for patients that receive deep or moderate sedation.

Physicians must document the time and date of a patient’s discharge, the patient’s condition when discharged, and the patient’s receipt of discharge instructions in the patient’s medical record.
