Medical Records Services
Licensed North Dakota Acute Care Hospitals, Primary Care Hospitals, and Specialized Hospitals must:
- Assign responsibility for medical record maintenance to a medical records service and maintain sufficient personnel to provide necessary medical record services.
- Ensure the confidentiality of medical records. Hospitals must limit access to patient medical records to authorized personnel and must obtain a patient’s written consent prior to releasing medical information.
- Wait to destroy medical records until the later date of a child patient reaching the age of 21 or 10 years following a patient’s last treatment. Records that are the subject of litigation may not be destroyed.
- Comply with requirements regarding the content of medical records.
- Require individuals to authenticate their written medical record entries.
