A medical examiner must investigate the cause of death whenever an individual dies violently, unexpectedly, without medical supervision, following an abortion, or while in prison or jail. The medical examiner may request a court to subpoena medical records to assist in the investigation. The Michigan Freedom of Information Act does not require disclosure of any medical records produced or obtained during a medical examiner’s investigation.
