A funeral director who receives a dead body must report the individual’s death. Included in the definition of a “dead body” is an infant born alive after an attempted abortion, but who later died. The funeral director must contact a next of kin to collect the required personal information and medical certifications meeting the requirements outlined in the statute. All death records must be certified by a funeral director or an individual with a courtesy license and must be filed with the local registrar within 72 hour after the death. When reporting the death of an infant born alive after an attempted abortion, but who later dies, the deceased infant must be listed as “Baby Doe,” and no information identifying the deceased infant or the parents should be included.
