A prescription can be electronically transmitted as long as it meets HIPAA regulations and state law. A prescription that is electronically submitted must include the following information:
- Name, address and phone number of the prescriber
- Full name of the patient
- Electronic signature or other means of verification of the prescriber’s identity
- Time and date of the transmission
- Identity of the pharmacy the information is being sent to
- Any other information required by federal or state law.
The electronic equipment used for electronic prescribing must adequately protect the confidentiality of the information being transmitted and must protect patient confidentiality.
