Birth centers must comply with the following requirements pertaining to patient medical records:
- If a patient is transferred or referred to another level of care provider during pregnancy, delivery or post-delivery, the record, or a complete copy of the record, must accompany the mother or newborn at the time of transfer;
- The mother’s entire record must be retained for seven years after discharge and date of last entry;
- The newborn infant’s entire record must be retained for seven years after the child reaches majority;
- Records must be stored to protect against loss, damage or unauthorized access; and
- The mother must sign a release of health record information prior to release of such information outside the birth center.
