“Dispensing Drugs and Devices”
The Board of nursing may authorize registered nurse practitioners (RNPs) to prescribe and dispense drugs and devices. RNPs with such authority must maintain prescriptions for at least 7 years and report their dispensing of controlled substances to the controlled substance prescription monitoring program. RNPs must document in a patient’s medical record information regarding the drug or device dispensed, the therapeutic reason for dispensing the drug or device, and the prescription order number. RNPs must record information about refilled prescriptions in the patient’s medical record or on the back of the prescription order.
