Rhode Island permits the physical restraint of nursing home patients only in emergencies or when “authorized in writing by a physician for a specified and limited period of time for the protection of the patient.” If a physician orders the use of a restraining device, the patient’s family or legal guardian must be notified and a copy of such notice must be placed in the patient’s medical record for at least one year.
