Freestanding birthing centers must maintain clinical records for every patient. Clinical records must contain medical records pertaining to each patient and newborn to justify the diagnosis and treatment. Clinical records must be maintained for 6 years after the last date of service. In the case of a minor patient, records must be retained for 6 years after the patient reaches 18 years old.
Clinical records must be treated with confidentiality. Facilities must have an identified locked area for clinical record storage. Clinical records must be protected from loss, damage and unauthorized use. All records must be disposed of by shredding, burning, or other similar protective measure in order to preserve the patients’ rights of confidentiality.
