On June 5, 2014, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) released its 10 Year Vision to Achieve an Interoperable Health IT Infrastructure. The vision points out that a strong, flexible health IT ecosystem is needed o achieve this goa, and to support transparency, decision-making, and inform payment reform. The infrastucture discussed will support more efficient systems, lead to scientific advancement, and will continuously improve the health system. The guiding principles laid out in the framework include:
- Building on the existing health IT infrastructure
- One size does not fit all
- Empower individuals
- Leveraging the market
- Simplify
- Maintaining modularity
- Considering the current environment and supporting multiple levels of advancement
- Focusing on value
- Protecting privacy and security in all parts of interoperability.
ONC sets forth a three, six, and ten year agenda for achieving interoperability, and lays out the building blocks to completing the tasks that have been laid out.
