Health Information Technology in Maine

The law requires that the health care provider either sign or electronically authenticate every entry in a patient’s medical records.  If the facility uses electronic means to generate a medical record, each user must have a security password that is known only to that individual in order to authenticate the record.1  In order to further the use of health information technology within the state, the Maine Quality Forum (a program within Dirigo Health) must conduct technology assessments, and encourage the adoption of electronic health records by providers.2
