Federal and State Program Integrity in Maine

The state of Maine does not have extensive regulations governing fraud and abuse of medical assistance programs, such as Medicaid and Medicare.  Maine has laws that hold individuals or organizations liable for making false claims or statements for payment to the state Department of Human Services.1  Additionally, the state maintains a Fraud Investigation Unit within the Department of Human Services.  The purpose of the Fraud Investigation Unit is to investigate instances of fraud and report them to the Attorney General.2
