All health service plans operating in the state of California must provide to the Director of the Department of Managed Care, a copy of their policies regarding confidentiality of patient information. Health service plans are also required to provide a written statement of confidentiality to patients upon request. The law outlines the required elements of the statement, which must include a description of data collection, when medical information may be disclosed, and patient access to medical information.
