Tenn. Code Ann. § 68-11-901 - Enumeration of Minimum Rights for Patients or Residents of a Nursing Home

Every patient or resident of a nursing home has the following minimum rights:

  1. To choose a personal physician;
  2. To be informed of the resident’s medical condition, unless medically contraindicated;
  3. To be given the opportunity to participate in the planning of the patient’s total care and medical treatment;
  4. To refuse treatment and to be informed of the consequences of that action;
  5. To refuse experimental treatment or drugs;
  6. To provide written consent to participate in research;
  7. To have records kept confidential and private;
  8. To provide written consent before releasing information about the resident, unless release is authorized by law;
  9. To exercise one’s independent judgment.
