“Purpose and policy under the public health law”

Every person has a right to control the decisions regarding his or her medical care, including the right to refuse cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The person may make a written directive to delegate an agent the authority to make health care decisions on the person’s behalf when he or she lacks the capacity to make healthcare decisions. The directive may also instruct his or her attending physician or APRN to provide, withhold, or withdraw life-sustaining treatment in the event he or she is near death or is permanently unconscious.
