“Breast cancer; information on treatment alternatives under the regulation of professions and occupations law”

Every physician must inform each patient diagnosed with breast cancer of the medically viable treatment alternatives to the patient, describe the treatment alternatives, and explain the relative advantages, disadvantages and risks associated with the treatment alternatives to allow the patient to make a prudent decision regarding treatment. The physician may orally communicate the information to the patient or the patient’s representative, provide the patient or the patient’s representative with a copy of the written summary and express his willingness to discuss the summary, or both. The patient’s medical record must reflect the physician’s compliance with this statute.
