Electronic recordkeeping systems; additional requirements
Providers using electronic records systems for patient records must use an offsite backup storage system, an image mechanism to copy signature documents, and a mechanism that ensures that once the data is input, it cannot be changed. Original hard copies of patient records can be destroyed once the record is electronically stored. Providers using electronic records must have policies and procedures for safeguarding confidentiality and unauthorized access to electronic patient information, authentication by electronic signature keys, and systems maintenance.
