Maine has established a Consumer Health Care Division within the Bureau of Insurance.  The purpose of the Division is to provide consumers of health insurance access to a toll free number, provide information regarding available health plans and options, inform consumers of their rights and responsibilities with regard to health insurance policies, distribute information to consumers on health plan performance, and assist consumers in filing complaints against health plans.  The Division must also disseminate quality of care information, and act as a resource in the development of health care policies that protect consumer rights.  In addition, the Division must use its resources to coordinate with other state and local agencies to assist health care consumers, particularly those who are low-income.
