A health care practitioner or facility may disclose, or when required by law must disclose, health care information without authorization in certain circumstances. Some of these scenarios include: to another health care practitioner or facility for diagnosis, treatment or care; to an agent, employee or independent contractor of the health care practitioner or facility (except for the purpose of marketing or sales); to a family or household member unless prohibited by the patient; to federal, state or local governmental entities in order to protect the public health and welfare; as directed by a court order; to a person to conduct scientific research; to the facility’s attorney; to a person engaged in payment activities; as well as for various other purposes.
