These requirements apply to all licensed general, psychiatric and special hospitals in New Jersey.
Every hospital patient has the right to promptly access the information contained in his or her medical record, including the right to obtain a copy of the record at a reasonable fee within 30 days of a written request, unless access is prohibited by a physician as detrimental to the patient's health and the reason for the prohibition is explained in the medical record. In this case, the patient's next of kin or guardian has the right to see the record, and the patient's legally authorized representative or physician has the right to obtain a copy of the record.
