Senators Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) introduced the Medicare Data Access for Transparency and Accountability Act (Medicare DATA Act, S. 1180) on June 18, 2013. The law would require HHS to create free, searchable database of all Medicare payments made to providers and suppliers starting in 2014. The database would contain a description of the items or services for which Medicare made a payment, and would also include the location of the providers and suppliers. The purpose of the database is to create greater price transparency for taxpayers to see how payments are allocated in the Medicare system.
