On February 3, 2014, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a final rule amending the Clinical Laboratory Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) and HIPAA. The final rule permits laboratories to, upon a patient's request, give the patient or his/her designee access to completed lab results. This expands patient's access to their medical information, as they can now get lab results from a physician or directly from the lab.
