On April 9, 2014, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released new data on payment and billing for services provided to Medicare beneficiaries by physicians and other health care professionals. This unprecedented release of information provides access to Medicare spending and individual physicians' billing practices. The data set includes over 880,000 individual health care providers who recieved $77 billion in Medicare payments combined in 2012. This data will allow consumers to make comparisons by physician, specialty, location, types of medical services provided, Medicare payment, and submited charges.
