The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services finalized the Electronic Health Records (EHR) Meaningful Use rule on Friday, August 29, 2014. The final rule provides eligible hospitals and providers some flexibility in how they meet the meaningful use requirements. The final rule also modifies reporting timelines. Eligible providers can use 2011-certified EHRs, or a combination of 2011- and 2014-certified EHR technology, for the 2014 EHR reporting period. The rule also gives some providers until 2016 to meet the Stage 2 requirements, and states that Stage 3 will begin in 2017 for providers who started the program in 2011 and 2012.
