The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has recently announced the launch of its Virtual Research Data Center (VRDC), which allows researchers to virtually access and analyze CMS' health care data in a secure way. Prior to the launch of the VRDC, CMS had to prepare and ship encrypted data files when researchers requested data. The VRDC allows CMS to fulfill requests for Medicare and Medicaid data in a timely manner that also protects the privacy and security of the data and at a lower cost for data users.
