Status of Health Information Exchanges: 50 State Comparison
This comparative map illustrates the structure of all 50 states' Health Information Exchange (HIE) State Designated Entity (SDE). The states are identified based on which organization has been contracted to organize health information exchange activities within that state. There are four major types of SDEs in the states. The least common type is a joint partnership between a previously existing state agency and a newly created organization. The most common is a public or private entity newly created, often by legislation, to manage and operate the HIE. A third type is one where the state government contracts HIE functions and capabilities to an existing Health Information Organization (HIO). The fourth type is where the state government directly runs the HIE via an existing agency, such as a Department of Health or a Department of Human Services. There is a fifth category for states for which no current information on an HIE is available. Note that this information is provided based on publicly accessible information made available by each state. As some operational plans continue to be updated, the state-designated entity may change.
